New York State Middle School Directors and Officers NYSMSA began in New York State in 1980 serving the needs of adults working with middle-level youth. NYSMSA supports teachers, administrators, parents and others in an effort to provide services to youth between the ages of ten and fifteen. Chris is the NYSMSA Region III Director and has been very active in promoting the middle level concept. Chris began his administrative career as Assistant Principal at the Glens Falls High School for three and a half years. Chris then returned to the Glens Falls Middle School in January of 2003 as Principal. Prior to that Chris served as Guidance Counselor for 13 years with the Glens Falls Middle School.

Tom has been a member of the NYSMSA Board of Directors for the past six years serving as Director of region IV. Tom has been involved in the development of the Essential Elements and the Middle Level reform initiatives from their inception. Tom has served as Team Leader for the Schools to Watch initiative, Site reviewer for the Regents Accreditation of Teacher Education (RATE) program, and Chairperson for the NYSMSA State conference which was held in Binghamton in 2001. Tom has been an administrator at the middle-level for the past 13 years and is currently serving as the Superintendent of Watkins Glen Central School District.

Olivia Sutton
Olivia Sutton is a graduate of The College of Saint Rose in Albany , New York , with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in English with a 7-12 extension. She also earned a master's degree from Walden University in Reading Instruction Across Content Areas 6-12. Olivia has five years of teaching experience with one year at the 9th grade level, including AIS. For the last four years she has taught at the 8th grade level (ELA) with inclusion classroom model experience. She is currently part of the South Glens Falls School District 's Differentiated Instruction Team and has served as a New York State Middle School Association Alternate Director for Region V.

Jim McIntyre

Jim McIntyre is a 6th grade teacher at Crispell Middle School in the Pine Bush Central School District, a varsity tennis coach, the director of Pine Bush's Odyssey of the Mind program, the Vice President for Member Services of the Pine Bush Teachers Association, and a middle school consultant. He has been recognized for his work in helping to create NYSMSA's middle level academy program. He was also a recipient of the NYSMSA Ross M. Burkhardt Middle Level Educator Award, and a recipient of the Mataraza Middle Level Teacher of the Year Award. He has presented at a wide variety of conferences, workshops and NYSMSA middle level academies from Buffalo to Westchester. Most often he features his work in teaming and instructional strategies in his presentations. Jim's favorite place is his classroom full of sixth graders. It is there that he works with them to inject interaction, movement and creativity into lessons that make learning real, vital and fun.

Dr. Shawn L. Robertson
Shawn is the principal of North Middle School in Lynbrook. He holds a BA from SUNY at Cortland, a MS in English from Queens College, and a MA in education from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. In May of 2005 he earned a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from St. John’s University.

Teal Abel
Serving as a member of the NYSMSA Board since 1996, Teal began her work as a reading and academic intervention specialist at the middle level in 1989. She also serves as a member of the Regent's Accreditation of Teacher Education (RATE) Team. Teal has recently been named a principal in the Indian River Central School District.
